Hello, I’m Rhian, an illustrator and photographer working from my home studio in Cardiff, Wales.
With a degree in Furniture Design, for the past 7 years I’ve been working as an account manager in the field of handmade furniture and fabrics. What I missed though was the freedom to create, and so I took a leap, left my job, and I’m now busy setting up my own company; Pluan Designs.
Pluan Designs (pronounced ‘plea-ann’, a play on the Welsh word ‘pluen’ which means feather) began as a desire to be more creative, a desire to spend my time working on something fulfilling and rewarding. I started keeping this blog to document the use photography as a means of art therapy, in my own personal journey with mental wellbeing.
It then grew and with my passion for making birthday cards and paintings for friends and family, and is now a happy mix of both photography and illustrations.
Over the next few months I’ll be expanding my range of illustrations and designs for future greeting cards and prints. I’ll keep you posted!
In the meantime, here is a picture of me for your amusement:

Thank you. Not at all – I’m from Cardiff in Wales. I’ve been living in London for the last 10 years and I’ve just moved back to my home town. Madeira looks beautiful by the way.
Are you a professional photographer? (If not, you should be 😉 )

Aw I’m not professional, but thank you so much for saying that, it means a lot to me! 😀 I’d like to make it a career, but I still haven’t made any money with it unfortunately! It’s one of the things that i’m most passionate about, so i won’t quit. 🙂

Hi Rhian,
You capture those photographic moments so well. And black and white… so classic. I love shadows and they come out so beautiful in black and white work. REALLY loved the unmade bed photograph. in the evening, I often lie on floor in gentle yoga pose and look at shadows cast onto ceiling from the moonlight. Maybe i’l try to capture it. You’ve inspired me!

Loved looking through your blog. Some wonderful photos, just my kind of thing, down to earth and from your own perspective, showing how you see things.
Your words on mental health are very brave and honest. That inspires other people to open up and share, which while quite scary is usually a very positive thing, to see that other people feel similarly and understand some of what you are experiencing.
I like the humble and unassuming feel of your blog. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thank you so much for writing this, it means a lot to me.
I believe the only way that stigma around mental health will dispel is through talking about it as much as possible. I’ve had some great and also not so great responses when I’ve been vocal about my own mental health. Strangely enough the bad excperiences make me more determined to speak out so that in future stigmatisation will hopefully happen less often.
Thank you again, your comment has made my week 🙂

Oh I’m pleased it was appreciated. I often worry that I’ll say the wrong thing! It does give me comfort reading other’s experiences when dealing with my own issues. Adjustment Disorder leaves me struggling with depression after ‘negative’ life changing events, which are luckily relatively few but sometimea come together, and I’m very wary of sharing that. However in just this last year i have seen what I consider quite a positive change in openly public debate and acceptance of mental health, alrhough as we know discussion and practical changes to prejudice in the workplace etc are a sifferent matter.
For me my blog is mostly about reading other people’s experiences and regaining self confidence through writing and reading reactions.
Thanks for your comments and for sharing too.
